Tea and coffee are such a normal part of everyday life that most people don’t think twice about them.

They’re comforting, energising, and often part of a daily routine.

But if you’re dealing with ongoing digestive symptoms — things like bloating, reflux, or unpredictable bowel habits — it’s worth taking a closer look at the relationship between caffeine and gut health.

Because while caffeine works well for some people…

👉 for others, it can quietly make symptoms worse.

☕ The benefits of caffeine (because it’s not all bad)

Let’s start with the positives.

Caffeine — particularly from coffee — has actually been linked to a number of health benefits:

  • It’s rich in antioxidants (polyphenols)
  • Contains small amounts of nutrients like magnesium and potassium
  • Has been associated with reduced risk of certain diseases
  • Can improve focus, alertness and physical performance

For many people, it’s an enjoyable and well-tolerated part of their day.

🤔 So why does caffeine affect gut health for some people?

This is something I see quite often in clinic.

People are eating well, trying to look after themselves… but still struggling with symptoms that don’t seem to make sense.

And sometimes, caffeine is sitting in the background as a trigger.

🚩 Signs caffeine might be affecting your gut

When caffeine doesn’t suit you, it doesn’t always show up in obvious ways.

Some of the more common patterns I see include:

  • bloating or discomfort after tea or coffee
  • needing to rush to the toilet shortly after drinking it
  • alternating between constipation and looser stools
  • reflux or a burning sensation
  • feeling jittery, anxious or “wired”
  • disrupted sleep — even if you only drink it in the morning

One of the biggest clues is when symptoms feel inconsistent or unpredictable.

⚠️ What’s actually happening in the body?

Caffeine stimulates your nervous system — essentially nudging your body into a mild “fight or flight” response.

That can:

  • speed up gut motility (which can lead to urgency)
  • increase stomach acid (potentially worsening reflux)
  • impact the gut-brain connection (affecting both digestion and anxiety)

For some people, that’s manageable.

But if your system is already a bit sensitive, it can be enough to tip things into symptoms.

🧩 It’s not always just about the coffee

This is the important bit.

Caffeine isn’t always the root cause of gut issues.

👉 Often, it’s acting as a trigger on top of something else

For example:

  • gut imbalances
  • IBS-type patterns
  • stress-related digestive issues

Which is why simply cutting it out doesn’t always completely resolve things…

…but it can give you some really useful insight.

🧪 A simple way to explore it

If you’re wondering whether caffeine and gut health might be linked for you, a simple experiment can help.

Try removing caffeine for 5–7 days and notice:

  • digestion
  • bloating
  • bowel habits
  • sleep
  • how calm or wired you feel

You don’t need to be perfect with it — just curious about what changes.

💡 The key takeaway

Caffeine isn’t “bad”.

But it’s also not neutral for everyone.

👉 If your symptoms feel confusing, inconsistent, or hard to pin down, it’s often worth looking at the everyday habits that might be contributing.

🤝 If you’d like help getting to the root of it

If you’re noticing patterns like this but aren’t sure what’s actually driving your symptoms, that’s exactly what I help clients with.

Because often it’s not about removing more and more foods…

👉 it’s about understanding what’s happening underneath the surface and addressing that properly.
